The Black Heritage Trail is a path in Boston, MA that winds through the hillside of Beacon Hill near Beacon Street and the Capital building. The Trail is an important landmark in American black history. In 1783, citizens never forgot the contributions that black American soldiers made in the war of independence. As a result of this recognition of sacrifice, the Commonwealth became the first U.S. state to abolish the practice of slavery. Subsequent to the Declaration, many freed blacks and escaped slaves from the south settled to areas around Beacon Hill and the North End. This area was one of the north's destinations for southern black slaves escaping along the Underground Railroad. The Black Heritage Trail is celebrated by landmarks and well known museums.
Other popular tourist attractions in Boston include Faneuil Hall, Burying Ground of the famous American soldiers and the Bunker Hill Monument. The Bunker Hill Monument is one of the most visible monuments celebrating Boston's place in the American Revolutions. The Monument is the first obelisk constructed in America the a symbol of the American spirit. This towering monument made from Quincy granite is a classic status that celebrates the Battle of Bunker Hill, one of the first American victories against the British. Other famous monuments in Boston are the Old State House, Paul Reverie's house and the US Constitution.
